Maude
Victoria Barlow, a Canadian author and social change activist, is the national
chair of The Council of Canadians, a liberal Canadian advocacy organization with
more than 100,000 members. She is a leading voice for water rights around the
world and co-founded the Blue Planet Project which fights against the privatization
of water. She is also a director of the International Forum on Globalization,
which conducts research and education on the negative effects of globalization
on social programs, foreign policy, health and the environment. Maude Barlow is
also a leading voice for the right to health care for all and is one of the key
players in the Canadian movement to stop the privatization of health care services.
She has written more than 14 books about social issues in support of the vision
that everyone has the fundamental right to food, clean water, education, health
care and dignified work. She has received numerous awards for her more than 35
years of social activism and advocacy, including the 2005 Right Livelihood Award,
widely known as "The Alternative Nobel Prize," and she was one of 1000
women nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as part of the 1000 Women For Peace
project.
